Hindus believe that buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya, one of the four most auspicious days of the Vedic calendar, would bring everlasting prosperity and success.
Jewellery shops enjoyed brisk business on the occasion.
The Star quoted a jewellery shop owner, as saying that his business had been good for the past three days and the momentum was expected to continue over the next two or three days.
"My shop has been packed for three days now," he said, adding that the price of gold had dropped, which could be another reason behind the sudden increase in customers buying gold.
According to the Tritiya legend, which originates from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, the Sanskrit word Akshaya means one that never diminishes.
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third lunar day of the Chitirai month in the Hindu calendar, which is between April 14 and May 14 every year. (ANI)
